Production of grain dryers based on microwave warming of farm product. Designed for dehydration of bulk materials.

      Our company (Agrarian Superhigh frequency Technologies limited liability company, shortly AST) developed an innovative technology for drying farm products based on   microwave warming of drying products. The device, which is using this technology for drying grain, corn, barley, sunflower seeds and other crops without burning gas, diesel fuel and other hydrocarbons, is already designed and produced. The technology and the device based on it are energy-conserving, environmentally safe, produce no pollution and therefore no greenhouse effect.

      The main difference of microwave dehydration from traditional drying ways is in volumetric warming. Warmth goes into the product not from the surface but is generated in a whole volume. Equal humidity distribution occurs from center of grain to the surface. Microwave grain dryer has an advantage: there is no heat transfer from the heater to product. While using other methods of grain drying first of all you need to warm up the air, then to transfer heat from air to product. There is inevitable heat loss in each stage: air heating, transporting it, heat transfer. So efficiency factor of the grain dryer goes near 50-60%. In microwave drying the source of heat is the product of drying. That is why the loss pointed above is absent, and the quality of product being dried is preserved. It raises grain dryer efficiency factor up to 90%.

      Usage of such technology for drying grain, legumes, and oil-yielding crops is relevant now because it helps to reduce energy consumption for dozens of times. And cost of energy resource make up almost 30% of grain prime cost.

      We developed and mastered single production of the drying units based on this technology. Drying units are used not only to get necessary humidity of the grain and oil seed crops, primarily seed stock, but also for disinfection of drying product.  

      Innovative technology and organization of microwave drying comply with up-to-day world requirements for farm production. 

      The device is patented in the Russian Federation, device and method safety is proved by sanitary and epidemiological inspection report and by the Certificate Of Conformance.

      All working processes were held under control and direct participation of specialists and scientists in the spheres of farm production and microwave energy usage. 

      Marketing researches have proved that big and small farm companies do need our product, which is planned to be used not only for grain drying, but also as an equipment to prepare raw product when producing oil and flour.
      With the help of our unit it is possible to perform microwave procession of the grain before grinding. This improves flour quality, membrane separation and taste, as well as leads to increase in fibrin concentration. Fast warming becomes possible, which is very actual in winter.

      Application of microwave energy allows decontamination of farm product from such fungi as Alternaria, Prechslera, mycelia fungus Cladosporum sp. Penicillius, which can spoil the grain during storage process. Also application of such energy rapidly decreases microtraums of the grain. It can dramatically increase quality of grain, its germinating power and speed of germination.

      Weve made an analysis of conducting research in application of microwave technologies in farming. The results allow us to say that microwave technology not only provides complex grain drying modes (including milk-wax ripeness) but also improves crop germination while seed-stock processing.

      During a long period of time members of AST cooperated with representatives of agriculture (farmers, owners of grain-elevators), and also with Zernograd Academy of agriculture. The result of this cooperation was in forward-looking application of microwave technologies in agriculture.

      It was the production of grain dryers based on microwave heating farm product with established production rate and capability of stationing. During this time members of AST has made the whole way from testing laboratory model of microwave unit and up to making of preproduction model AST-3 with average power.

      Development type worked fine during tests in Zernograd, and preproduction model was tested in Nosovo-village situated near Taganrog.

      Weve got good results in drying oil-yielding crops.

      Our group is planning to bring out to the market a new kind of grain dryers. It is based on microwave heating of farm product with usage of vertical drying chamber.

Qualitative difference of upcoming dryers are:

  • a high production rate of a plant;
  • small dimension and weight; only electric power usage;
  • economy (low power consumption) and absence of grain contamination with carcinogenic fuel combustion materials;
  • carrying out warming inside the grain;
  • absence of mictrotraums of grain which unavoidable in traditional drying technologies;
  • capability of high humidity grain processing;
  • improvement of seed germination while seed-stock processing;
  • availability of automatic control;
  • capability of transporting;
  • low price of grain processing and maintenance costs;
  • fire safety.  

      The plant for drying free-flowing materials and vertical drying chamber are protected by patent of Russian Federation   38912  and  2267067. All patent applications are handed in from AST.

      The cost of a grain dryer depends on its production rate. Prices on present grain dryers are fully comparable with prices of our enterprise production. Main difference is in additional costs of our competitors on plant mounting, setting a foundation and so on. And also maintenance of AST plant does not use additional energy carriers which is a significant advantage.

      Our company now working on building dryers for rice, grass and so on.
